This project is a redesign of a regional tourism website regarding cycling. In a team of five we rebranded and redesigned a section of the website. We furthermore made our redesign into a progressive web app. It contains all comprehensive information for cyclists on their journey through the Fichtel mountains region, such as routes, activities, tourism and news.
In university, in a team of five students, we were given the task of examining an existing website regarding cycling through the Fichtel mountains, analysing its’ flaws and redesigning it.
We started this project off by analysing key elements of the original website and discussing both the importance of each elements as well as potential ways to improve the website. We concluded to redesign the entirety as a progressive web app, to be able to use it on-the-go. The original website looked outdated, which is why we decided to scrape most of the original design, keeping mainly the written content of the components.
We researched applications and websites regarding tourism and cycling, collecting information on content as well as general design ideas. We evaluated our finds, considering both positive as well as negative aspects.
With this information our next task was to figure out the functionality of website. We focused on the components it needed and evaluated the importance of several functions for the user. To help with this process, we created a user journey, a user flow as well as a functional description. Two important functions we focused on were the map and search function of each trail, as well as being accessible in places without a connection to the internet. This is why we decided to create a responsive web app and add a print file of each trail. Another important feature we developed is the route ID, consisting of four geometric symbols for each trail.
Our design process started by creating a moodboard of imagery we drew inspiration from. Furthermore, we looked into various illustration styles for the icons and other elements. We aimed for an authentic, free and adventurous look. We also settled on a color theme, typography and in general new brand look and accordingly shot both picture and video material on sight.
We lastly implemented our finished design as code to build the final prototype website.
